Get to know Montamarta

The small village of Montemarta is located halfway between Zamora and Benavente in the course of the Via de la Plata, which is why it has become an obligatory stop for pilgrims.

At this stop, pilgrims should consider whether to turn off to Santiago along the Camino Sanabrés or whether to continue along the Via de la Plata and then connect in Astorga with the Camino Francés.

Also, it is possible to reach the village by public transport thanks to the company Alsa and Vivas, both have bus lines that connect the village daily with Zamora and Benavente.

What to see

Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel

Built in the sixteenth century, it houses an important Romanesque baptismal font inside and ends, on the outside, with a large belfry with balcony, weathervane and numerous stork nests. It highlights the sculpture dedicated to the Zangarrón, a typical character of the festivities of the town of Montamarta that runs through the streets of the town on New Year’s Day and Epiphany asking for an aguinaldo.

Ermita de Santa María del Castillo

It is the most emblematic monument of the town of Montamarta, built in the sixteenth century. Located next to one of the tails of the Ricobayo reservoir, its general style belongs to the Renaissance school and stands out in its interior by a carving of the Virgin of the Castle. In its north wall are the oldest remains of the temple, Romanesque style: the corbels.

This reservoir bathed by the waters of the Esla is located just outside the town of Montamarta. In times of thaw and coinciding with the flooding of the river is common to flood the surrounding land of the village, causing numerous damages and destruction.

In the village of Montamarta it is very typical to celebrate the slaughter of the pig once the winter arrives, this allows to enjoy delicacies such as meats and sausages throughout the year.
