About this stage
This will be our last stage inside Asturias, at the end of which we will give a warm welcome to Ribadeo, the first town in the Galician territory we will set foot on, just like the key on its coat of arms shows, symbolising the entrance to Galicia. Historically, Vegadeo used to be the access point to Galicia, a little farther south than Ribadeo, but the construction of Santos bridge between Castropol and Ribadeo in the late 80s, substantially altered this route.
Along today’s journey, there is an alernative way via Tapia de Casariego for those who prefer to follow the coastline

The first part of the stage could be a little bit complicated because the indications aren’t good enough, you just have to pay attention and be careful. You will also have to walk for approximately 15 kilometers with no services, so we recommend you to buy all the needed stuff before starting Some parts are complicated to cyclist and people with reduced mobility so it is better for them to go through the LU-133.

Km 0 ‧ La Caridad
We start our walk at the town hall square, turning to the right after the town hall. Not much farther, we will have to cross Carballeiros creek, climbing, immediately after, to Morcegos peak. From here, we will have to cross the national road a few times and zigzag along local tracks that lead to another creek, close to San Pelayo, where we join road N-634. This way, we reach Valdepares, one of the parishes of El Franco municipality

Km 3,5 ‧ Valdepares
In the event of adverse weather conditions that prevent us from crossing Carballeiros creek, we will have to slightly detour by the road via Valdepares and neighbouring El Franco parish, where we join the national road again and cross the river Porcía, which marks the border between El Franco and Tapia de Casariego municipalities.
Along an uphill tarmac track, we will get closer to Porcía and Cruz de la Caleya, marking the spot where the route diverts and we must choose which way to go to enter Galicia.
Km 5,1 ‧ Porcía
In this occasion, we are going to continue via Tol, a little inland but the official route, so we must turn left. We leave Porcía heading towards Brul, crossing road AS-24 and walking along local roads within Castropol municipality. After some 6 kilometres, we leave Brul behind taking road AS-31 towards Tol.
Km 12,9 ‧ Toi
A milestone farther ahead marks the diversion towards Vegadeo, which was once the official entrance to Galicia, when there was no way of crossing the estuary unless heading to Santiago de Abres. Nowadays we can cross Santos bridge, so we follow the road to Barres, where we have to cross the national road and then join back road AS-31 with an eye already on Figueras.
Km 18,5 ‧ Figueras
At this point, we cross the mentioned bridge by the walkway parallel to the tarmac and find ourselves in Galician lands. At the end of the bridge, we take Rosalía de Castro avenue to the left. We wander through Justo Barreiro and Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo streets until we reach España square.
