Today’s journey is going to be one of the toughest stages of the entire route, with two
steep climbs and a slow entrance in Gijón. Furthermore, upon arrival in Casquita, we will
have to choose whether to head towards Oviedo, along the Primitive Way, or to continue
along the Northern Way, passing by Gijón. This decision will mark the rest of our journey
Pilgrim Recommendation
This is an easy stage for everyone. The only problem is the dual carriageway, you should be very
careful. It is an easy stage.

Itinerary
Km 0 ‧ Villaviciosa
We take Cabanilles street in front of Santa María de la Oliva church, which continues along
Maximino Miyar road. Shortly after, we take the promenade along the river Linares to the
right and, a little farther ahead, we cross San Juan bridge to continue past La Parra
neighbourhood and Casquita, spot where the route splits to continue along the Primitive
Way or the Northern, which we have chosen to follow.

Km 3,7 ‧ Casquita
Given that we are heading towards Gijón, we continue straight towards Grases de Abajo
and Niéveres, which we reach after just some 2 kilometres. From here, we will continue on
road VV-9 to surmount Alto de la Cruz, a steep hill that will definitely challenge our
endurance. The views over Peón and Boides valleys, however, are worth the effort and are
the perfect spot to catch our breath. From there, we will stay on the same road, now
downhill and across the other side of the slope, heading towards said Peón valley.
Km 15,2 ‧ Peón
When it seemed that we had finished climbing, we face a new hill, this time towards Alto
de Curbiello. We continue along the old Camín Real de Peón on road AS-331, which once
connected Villaviciosa and Gijón, crossing the vilages of Bárcena, Requexo… A little
farther ahead, we turn right, passing by a chapel. At the hamlet of La Olla, we turn left
over the motorway and continue along country tracks until we come out onto road AS-331
again. We keep descending all the way to Camping de Deva.
Km 21,8 ‧ Deva (Gijón)
With more than 20 kilometres behind us, we find ourselves right at the outskirts of Gijón,
facing the last descent to the centre of the big city, where we will have the chance to visit
the many tourist attractions Gijón has to offer. We will walk these last 6 kilometres
following the Senda de Peñafrancia.
