Pilgrim Travel (also known as Pilgrim.es or Pilgrim Camino de Santiago) is a company specialised in the management of services and experiences on the Camino de Santiago. We are much more than a travel agency for the Camino, as we contribute to its international promotion, we participate in events to promote its cultural and historical heritage, and we work hard to make sure that its magic lasts forever.
Created in 2016, Pilgrim Travel emerged from the idea of two expert pilgrims on the Camino who saw the need for an organised system to provide support and assistance to walkers who found themselves in need of help.
Over the years, the company has evolved. At the beginning, the company’s efforts were focused on the support of pilgrims. Nowadays, we manage all types of services on the Camino: booking accommodation, preparation of personalised budgets for pilgrims, rental of special bicycles for the Camino de Santiago, transport of backpacks… That is to say, any service that the pilgrim may need during their journey.
This growth, carried out from the vision of pilgrims, has been produced in such a way that, in 2018, we had a little more than 5 employees, and in 2019, we already had more than 30 and with expectations to continue growing.
All of this has generated so much publicity that we have had the honour of collaborating with large companies such as Estrella Galicia and Correos. The latter, under the highly valuable objective of fighting for a more sustainable Way of Saint James.
The beginning of the way
A group of friends decided to do their first Camino de Santiago from Villafranca del Bierzo, and a dog crossed their path biting one of its members; at the moment of trying to explain to the ambulance which was the position where they were with the injured person, the problems began and continued throughout the day.
It was at that precise moment that they began to realise that something was going wrong on the Camino. It is true that, like all adventures and, especially with the spiritual burden that comes with its realisation, the fact that there may be difficulties or shortages of certain things that can be missed are included in the experience. For them, however, it created a turning point that led them to study the Camino step by step every time they set out after putting on their boots.
Time to get down to work
Having walked all the different routes of the Camino and having shared the experience with a large number of pilgrims. The needs that a pilgrim might have during his or her adventure were already clear.
Based on all the experience and integrated in one of the specialities of one of the founders, technology, in 2012, the project began to be defined.
Over the years, and after renouncing the entry of several sponsors in the project with the aim of maintaining its original essence, enough information and knowledge necessary for the development of a specialised website on the Camino, made by pilgrims for pilgrims, was gathered.
Founding of the company
After the creation of the website they decided in 2016, founding the company, Pilgrim Travel SL.
In this website, a differentiating element was designed such as the Travel Planner. This allows the pilgrim to plan his or her own Camino as personalised as possible. In this way, it would be possible to offer a budget that is as adventure-oriented as possible and to help the pilgrim.
At the same time, a series of organised experiences were defined for pilgrims who did not know the Camino, but they wanted to experience it, and services that they might need.
One of the differentiating elements, in which we saw a particular need, was a mobile application that would allow people to solve problems in real time, on the ground, because on many occasions the need for accommodation, the desire to find a certain oint of interest or to find out certain information about the stage appear unexpectedly and that’s why we wanted to be there to help.
The company is currently at its peak, trying to build on the success achieved so far in a controlled manner. With its sights set on the next Xacobeo year, the company is preparing for one of the most anticipated events in the history of the Camino that will break records never seen before.
We are a company founded by pilgrims with many Compostelas behind us, many entries to Santiago without credentials and a few walks to Fisterra. We started our own Camino with the mission to give support on the Camino to all the people who need it and help discover the magic of the Camino de Santiago to pilgrims thirsty for adventure.
We offer management of personalized experiences on the Camino, all the necessary services during the route, the best information of the Camino (routes, stages, maps…) and a close attention to satisfy all the doubts of the pilgrims who need help.
All this through a balance between traditional and technological means in which physical offices are mixed next to the Cathedral of Santiago or telephone/mail support for the management of the necessary services.
With a medium-term objective such as the Xacobeo year, we are preparing to be a reference in the Camino de Santiago, not only online, but with a presence at the foot of the routes and have greater proximity to the pilgrims.
In addition, one of our special objectives is to collaborate with different entities to preserve the maximum heritage and promote rural development in the areas surrounding the pilgrimage routes.
Created by pilgrims, we are aware of the traditional spirit that surrounds the Camino, but as they say if there is a path for everyone, everyone has the right to choose how to do it and, therefore, will have different needs.
We pay special attention to the balance between the traditional Camino with the modernity of technology. In addition, being founded by pilgrims, we are aware of everything that surrounds the Camino de Santiago, so we carry out work to improve the sustainability of the routes and try to train pilgrims towards an ecological and respectful approach to the cultural and historical heritage of the Camino.
