However,\n    <strong>being a pilgrim goes beyond a simple meaning<\/strong>, it embraces\n    much more, it brings together a number of feelings that are not reflected in\n    a definition.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Below, we will define the pilgrim from the original point of view and from\n    our humble point of view:\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>Literal meaning<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    According to the definition of the\n    <a\n      aria-label=\"RAE (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\"\n      href=\"https:\/\/dle.rae.es\/?id=SZLEfIi\"\n      rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"\n      target=\"_blank\"\n      >Royal Spanish Academy<\/a\n    >, a pilgrim is &#8220;Said of a person: Who by devotion or vow goes to visit a\n    sanctuary, especially if he\/she wears the Bordon and the Esclavina&#8221;.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    This definition is absolutely true. Originally, pilgrims were people who\n    went to pay their respects, atone for their sins or ask for a blessing, to\n    holy and important places.\n    <strong>In the case of the Camino de Santiago<\/strong>, a pilgrim would walk\n    the Camino with the aim of reaching the Cathedral and kneeling\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/the-way-st-james\/\"\n      >at the tomb of the Apostle Santiago.<\/a\n    >\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Over the years,\n    <strong\n      >this religious context has ended up being just another part of the\n      overall definition<\/strong\n    >\n    of the pilgrim which, as we have said above, includes much more, which is\n    why, although it is not reflected in dictionaries and encyclopaedias, we\n    want to show you our meaning of what a pilgrim is.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>OUR MEANING<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    For us a pilgrim is\n    <strong>a person who goes on a pilgrimage route in pursuit of a goal<\/strong\n    >, however, this goal is not only religious as its meaning states.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    As a different adventure or to disconnect from the overwhelming world, many\n    people decide to become pilgrims to experience the simplicity of walking\n    surrounded by nature, culture and exquisite company.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-post\" id=\"porque\">\n  <h2 id=\"porque\">REASONS TO BECOME A PILGRIM<\/h2>\n  <p>\n    What is it that makes someone decide to do the Camino de Santiago or any\n    other pilgrimage route?\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Having\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/\">managed the adventure<\/a>\n    of thousands of pilgrims and having spoken to them, we\n    <strong>have seen many different reasons<\/strong>: promises to keep, need to\n    disconnect from technology and many more. However, we have been able to\n    clarify certain points that are usually fulfilled:\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>BE DEVOTE<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    It is still one of the main reasons. Many people wish to go on a pilgrimage\n    route in order t<strong\n      >o pay their respects at some important sanctuary<\/strong\n    >\n    and have their sins atoned for It is often a common view that the more\n    kilometers one has traveled, the more one&#8217;s mistakes will be forgiven in\n    full.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>A QUEST FOR A DIFFERENT KIND OF ADVENTURE<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    The pilgrimage routes are made up of traditional paths, technology is\n    completely absent and nature is the queen of the paths along which pilgrims\n    walk.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Walking these routes becomes a different experience, going beyond a beach\n    holiday or a cruise ship journey. A\n    <strong\n      >pilgrimage is for someone who wants to experience a totally different and\n      fulfilling adventure<\/strong\n    >.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>BEING ABLE TO SHARE STORIES<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    More and more people decide to\n    <strong>get together with the aim of making a pilgrimage<\/strong>. Walking\n    kilometres with the best company, sharing moments that occur on the route\n    and strengthening bonds.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    In addition, part of the magic of pilgrimages is that, although you do it\n    alone, in reality, you will never be alone. You can surround yourself with\n    other pilgrims or\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/organised-camino-from-sarria\/\">groups<\/a> who are doing the same route,\n    share a few stages and enjoy their company and then continue your own path.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>GETTING TO KNOW OTHER CULTURES AND NATURE<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Many of the pilgrimage routes have been travelled for more than a thousand\n    years, with the passing of a large number of devotees who walked along these\n    routes, there are\n    <strong\n      >several buildings erected with the purpose of leaving a historical\n      stamp<\/strong\n    >.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Churches, monuments, sanctuaries and ancient bridges are just some of the\n    wonderful sights that pilgrims can appreciate along their route.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-post\" id=\"rutas\">\n  <h2>Pilgrimage Routes<\/h2>\n  <p>\n    There are many pilgrimage routes throughout the world that were created with\n    the aim of reaching a sanctuary.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>The Camino de Santiago<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    We will not go into much depth on this route since our entire website talks\n    about the\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/routes\/\">Camino de Santiago.<\/a> Browse through our pages,\n    discover its origins and the number of\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/routes\/\">different routes<\/a> that encompass a network of\n    routes throughout the Spanish territory.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>Kumano Kodo<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    The pilgrimage route par excellence on the Asian continent, specifically in\n    Japan. It has been declared a\n    <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> and crosses the paths that run\n    between 3 of the country&#8217;s most important sanctuaries.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/camino-kumano-kodo\/\">Kumano Kodo<\/a> and the Camino de\n    Santiago are\n    <strong>officially twinned routes and have a special certificate<\/strong>,\n    if you do both pilgrimage routes you can get the <em>Dual Pilgrim<\/em>,\n    unique certificate in the world.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>Camino Lebaniego<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Like the Camino de Santiago, the\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/el-camino-lebaniego\/\">Camino Lebaniego<\/a>\n    is in Spain. It is a small route that starts in the town of San Vicente de\n    la Barquera, Asturias, and goes to San Toribio with the aim of going to its\n    monastery, where\n    <strong>one of the greatest relics of Christianity in the world<\/strong>,\n    the <em>Lignum Crucis<\/em>, is located.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>Many others<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    There are several pilgrimage routes around the world, among them the\n    <strong\n      >pilgrimage route of the seven churches of Rome or the St. Cuthbert&#8217;s Way\n      in the UK.<\/strong\n    >. We will not dedicate space to all of them, otherwise this article would\n    be too long, but this only represents the greatness of the pilgrimage\n    routes.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-post\" id=\"rituales\">\n  <h2>\n    IF YOU DO THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, THESE ARE THE RITUALS YOU SHOULD DO WHEN\n    YOU ARRIVE IN SANTIAGO\n  <\/h2>\n  <p>\n    If you decide to venture on the Camino de Santiago, you have to take into\n    account certain rituals. Before strolling through the cobbled streets of the\n    capital of Santiago de Compostela,\n    <strong\n      >all pilgrims in Santiago de Compostela must perform at least one of the\n      following rituals<\/strong\n    >:\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>\n    ENTER THE CATHEDRAL OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA THROUGH ITS HOLY DOOR OR DOOR\n    OF FORGIVENESS\n  <\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Located in the Plaza de la Quintana, despite being at the back of the\n    Cathedral, it is one of its most emblematic and important parts.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Unfortunately, only pilgrims arriving in Santiago during a\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/xacobeo-2027\/\">Holy Year<\/a> or Extraordinary Jubilee, will be\n    able to pass through its walls.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    It is opened from the outside, in a ceremony performed by the main religious\n    authorities on the eve of the Holy Year, usually on 31 December.\n  <\/p>\n  <div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n    <figure class=\"aligncenter\">\n      <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"245\"\n        alt=\"Holy Door of the Cathedral of Santiago\"\n        class=\"wp-image-34281\"\n        src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/catedral-puerta-santa.jpg\"\n srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/catedral-puerta-santa.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/catedral-puerta-santa-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\n      <figcaption>Holy Door of the Cathedral of Santiago<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n  <\/div>\n  <h3>ATTENDING THE PILGRIM MASS<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    If you have planned your stages correctly or have simply been lucky enough\n    to arrive in the city of Compostela before 12 noon,\n    <strong\n      >we strongly recommend that you attend the Pilgrim&#8217;s Mass at the High\n      Altar.<\/strong\n    >\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    There is also a general liturgy at 19:30, coinciding with the ceremony of\n    the Botafumeiro (except on Good Friday), so you have no excuse not to attend\n    this magical and unforgettable moment. At the beginning of this liturgy, a\n    list is recited of the first pilgrims of each day to collect the certificate\n    at the Pilgrim&#8217;s Office.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    We recommend all those who wish to be included in this select list to go to\n    this Office <strong>first thing in the morning to register<\/strong>,\n    preferably the day before so as not to have to endure the long queues that\n    usually form at the doors.\n  <\/p>\n  <div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n    <figure class=\"aligncenter\">\n      <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"\n        alt=\"Pilgrim Mass\"\n        class=\"wp-image-34275\"\n        src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/misa-del-peregrino-1024x576.jpg\"\n srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/misa-del-peregrino-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/misa-del-peregrino-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/misa-del-peregrino-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/misa-del-peregrino.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\n      <figcaption>Pilgrim Mass<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n  <\/div>\n  <h3>VISIT THE CRYPT AND THE APOSTLE&#8217;S REMAINS<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    You cannot leave the Cathedral without descending through its passages to\n    the crypt beneath the High Altar.\n    <strong\n      >Here you will find the remains of the Apostle and two of his faithful\n      disciples<\/strong\n    >, making it one of the most special places in this pilgrimage centre.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Almost nothing remains of its original construction, the current\n    reconstruction having been carried out in the 19th century. The remains are\n    preserved in a silver casket, which in turn stores a small compartmentalised\n    cedar box.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>ASCENDING TO THE DRESSING ROOM AND EMBRACING THE APOSTLE<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    After descending to the heart of the Cathedral, it is time to climb the\n    steep staircase that will take you to the camar\u00edn, a\n    <strong>Baroque room that rises above the High Altar<\/strong> and houses a\n    polychrome sculpture of Pilgrim Santiago\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    He is dressed in his best clothes, perfectly positioned for anyone who\n    wishes to embrace him, thus carrying out one of the most famous and moving\n    traditions of this millenary pilgrimage.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>\n    RITUALS IN THE PORTICO OF GLORY (NOW IN DISUSE DUE TO ITS PROHIBITION)\n  <\/h3>\n  <p>\n    These are two rituals that were carried out over many years, a good example\n    of which is the wear and tear of the stone that it shows today.
