This is why there are some Jacobean routes that fall into\n    oblivion, such as\n    <strong\n      >the Camino Olvidado (Forgotten Way) or Old Way of St. James.<\/strong\n    >\n  <\/p>\n  <h5>\n    YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN:\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/way-of-st-james-from-sarria\/\"\n      >THE WAY OF SANTIAGO FROM SARRIA<\/a\n    >\n  <\/h5>\n  <p>\n    This Camino is documented as one of the first routes of the Jacobean route\n    and links the cities of\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/northern-way\/bilbao\/\">Bilbao<\/a>\n    and\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/french-way\/villafranca-del-bierzo\/\">Villafranca del Bierzo<\/a>\n    to later join the\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/french-way\/\">French Way<\/a> or\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/winter-way\/\">Winter Way<\/a>, with a total distance of\n    approximately 637 km.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"single-bar\" \/>\n<ul class=\"index\">\n  <span>Index<\/span>\n  <li><a href=\"#Etapas\">Stages<\/a><\/li>\n  <li><a href=\"#Que-ver-y-comer\">What to See and Eat<\/a><\/li>\n  <li>\n    <a href=\"#Alojamientos\">Accommodation, Signposting and Accessibility<\/a>\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"single-bar\" \/>\n<div class=\"section-post\" id=\"Historia\">\n  <h2>HISTORY AND ORIGINS OF THE OLD WAY OF SANTIAGO<\/h2>\n  <p>\n    During the 9th and 12th centuries, Spain was in the midst of the reconquest\n    of the lands occupied by Muslim troops.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    The continuous battles that took place caused great\n    <strong>concern among the pilgrims<\/strong> in the area, who decided to\n    abandon the roads in the interior of the meseta and make the pilgrimage\n    further north of the peninsula.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    In the north, the pilgrims also found the coastal route too complicated,\n    which led them <strong>to look for an alternative<\/strong>.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    They were at a crossroads, with a complicated route along the coast to the\n    north and continuous attacks by Muslim troops further south, so\n    <strong>the alternative<\/strong> left to them was what is known today as the\n    <strong>Camino Olvidado or Forgotten Way.<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    This route allowed us to cross the Pyrenees mountain range and continue\n    through the lower part of the mountain, along a slightly complicated route.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    When the flat areas of the northern plateau fell on the side of the\n    Reconquest, the Kings of Navarre and Castile and Leon provided\n    <strong>greater security for the French Way<\/strong>, and the fact that it\n    has a simpler route meant that the Forgotten Way fell into disuse, hence its\n    name.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    Currently, there are several associations that are trying to recover the use\n    of this alternative route.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    To such an extent is the initiative to rescue this Camino that\n    <strong>a connection point was made with the French Way<\/strong> at\n    B\u00e1rcena<strong>.<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-post\" id=\"Etapas\">\n  <h2 id=\"Etapas\">STAGES OF THE CAMINO OLVIDADO<\/h2>\n  <p>\n    From Bilbao to Villafranca del Bierzo and then, via the French Way or, from\n    Ponferrada along the Winter Way, you reach the destination of Santiago de\n    Compostela. <strong>Camino de Invierno:<\/strong>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/winter-way\/stage-1-ponferrada-las-medulas\/\"\n        >Stage 1 Ponferrada \u2013 Las M\u00e9dulas<\/a\n      >\n    <\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-post\" id=\"Que-ver-y-comer\">\n  <h2>PLACES AND GASTRONOMY OF INTEREST ON THE OLD WAY TO SANTIAGO<\/h2>\n  <h3>PLACES<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    We can find a wide range of opportunities to observe\n    <strong>the heritage of the area<\/strong>, within the archaeological\n    heritage we find:\n  <\/p>\n  <ul>\n    <li><strong>Menhir-bridge<\/strong>: In the town of Reinosilla.<\/li>\n    <li>\n      <strong>Ercina Hillfort and Celtic Hillfort of Redodi\u00f1a<\/strong>: In the\n      town of Villafranca del Bierzo.\n    <\/li>\n    <li><strong>Roman Villa<\/strong>: In the locality of Camesa<\/li>\n    <li>\n      <strong>Palace of the Marquises of Aguilar and Villalobos<\/strong>: In the\n      town of Aguilar de Campo\n    <\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n  <p>\n    We will also find a large number of constructions from other periods such\n    as:\n  <\/p>\n  <ul>\n    <li>\n      <strong>Torre\u00f3n de los Velascos:<\/strong> In the town of Espinosa de los\n      Monteros.\n    <\/li>\n    <li><strong>Wall with six gates:<\/strong> In Aguilar de Campo<\/li>\n    <li>\n      <strong>A large number of bridges to help pilgrims:<\/strong> You can find\n      them in the towns of G\u00fce\u00f1es, Bo\u00f1ar, Villafranca del Bierzo, Salinas &#8230;.\n    <\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n  <h3>GASTRONOMY<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Here is a list of the typical foods of this Camino and in which village you\n    can find them:\n  <\/p>\n  <h4>Railway pot<\/h4>\n  <p>\n    This is the name given to a stew made with needle meat that the workers on\n    the Bilbao-La Robla railway used to make at their workplaces to keep it\n    warm.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    You can find it in the town of Balmaseda, on\n    <strong>Stage 2 (G\u00fce\u00f1es &#8211; Nada de Ordunte)<\/strong> of this Camino.\n  <\/p>\n  <h4>Dairy products (pasiego cheese, quesada, butter&#8230;)<\/h4>\n  <p>\n    In\n    <strong>Stage 4 (Espinosa de los Monteros &#8211; Pedrosa de Vadeporres)<\/strong>\n    we find the town of Espinosa de los Monteros which, although it is a\n    traditional livestock farming town, has a variety of milk products worth\n    tasting.\n  <\/p>\n  <h4>Aguilar biscuits<\/h4>\n  <p>\n    The biscuit industry in the town of Aguilar de Campoo, on\n    <strong>Stage 8 (Aguilar de Campoo &#8211; Cervera de Pisuerga)<\/strong>, is\n    famous. In the 1960s, up to five biscuit factories were open in this town.\n  <\/p>\n  <h4>Puff pastry<\/h4>\n  <p>\n    Delicious dessert made in the town of Cistierna, located in\n    <strong>Stage 12 (Cistierna &#8211; Bo\u00f1ar).<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n  <h4>Trout pie<\/h4>\n  <p>\n    It is a surprising dish that is made to order in the workshop of the\n    original nicanores. You will find this food on\n    <strong>Stage 13 (Bo\u00f1ar &#8211; La Robla)<\/strong>.\n  <\/p>\n  <h4>Empanada de batall\u00f3n<\/h4>\n  <p>\n    Also called <strong>Empanada berciana<\/strong>, it is special because of the\n    use of chopped potato and chard as ingredients inside. You can find it at\n    the end of the Camino, in\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/french-way\/villafranca-del-bierzo\/\">Villafranca del Bierzo<\/a>\n    and surroundings.\n  <\/p>\n  <h4>Botillo, Bierzo roasted peppers, Bierzo apple&#8230;<\/h4>\n  <p>\n    These are products with Protected Geographical Indications and, in the case\n    of the apple, a Denomination of Origin, without a doubt more than enough\n    reason to stop on our pilgrimage through the town of\n    <strong>Villafranca del Bierzo.<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-post\" id=\"Alojamientos\">\n  <h2>ACCOMMODATION, SIGNPOSTING AND ACCESSIBILITY OF THE CAMINO OLVIDADO<\/h2>\n  <h3>ACCOMODATION<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Due to its scarcity of pilgrims and being a road in disuse for many years\n    (although they are trying to recover its use), this Camino has\n    <strong>very little variety of accommodation<\/strong>, mostly rural houses.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    It has hostels for pilgrims, but few, although every year they are\n    increasing the number of these accommodations, although mostly private.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>SIGNAGE<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    It is not a route that is badly signposted, but the signs are not at the\n    same level as on other routes of the Camino de Santiago, so\n    <strong>we must be attentive to all the signs<\/strong> that we find,\n    otherwise there is a danger of getting lost.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    If you get lost, it is best to <strong>retrace your steps<\/strong> or ask\n    anyone you meet on the Camino, it is common in the area to help pilgrims who\n    are disoriented.\n  <\/p>\n  <h3>ACCESSIBILITY<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    In case you want to do the\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/camino-de-santiago-by-bike\/\">Camino de Santiago by bike<\/a>, it\n    is <strong>not the most recommended<\/strong>, as it has a great difficulty\n    due to its itinerary, although it is not impossible to do so if you like\n    <strong>adventure with great challenges<\/strong>, this is yours.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    In the past, it was a difficult route for pilgrims, one of the reasons why\n    it lost relevance to the detriment of the French Way.\n  <\/p>\n  <p>\n    For people with some kind of disability that implies a\n    <strong>reduced mobility<\/strong>, the complicated route does not mean that\n    it is impossible to do, but it will be <strong>more difficult<\/strong> than\n    other routes.
