After the settlement of the Templars in these lands, the king gave them several lands in order to give protection to the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.<\/p> <p>Ejerce as the capital of Bierzo, and since the eleventh century has been closely linked to the Jacobean route, with a great cultural and religious heritage. Two routes converge in the city, the French Way and the Winter Way, the latter being a variant that was born out of the need to avoid O Cebreiro in the harshest months of winter.<\/p> <p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div id=\"locationSection\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"p-h2-town\">Location<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<hr>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"p-h3-town\">How to get there<\/h3>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<p>The city of Ponferrada is well connected, the main way to access the city is by the A-6 highway linking A Coru\u00f1a and Madrid, either by exit 382 or 388. It also has a bus station and train station, so there are daily connections with major cities, not only in Le\u00f3n, but also in Galicia and the rest of Spain.\n\n<p>The city also has a city bus service, so getting around the city is easy and fast. It was built in 1567 and was originally divided into two sections, one of which housed the coat of arms of Philip II and the other the great clock. It was later in 1693 when it was added the small belfry in which today houses the bell, topped with a beautiful spire. From its exterior highlights the facade for its decorative sobriety in which only has the coat of arms. After the death of the owners, it fell into disuse so the city council decided to give it to the Discalced Carmelites to reconvert it into a hostel for pilgrims and the poor. <\/p>\n\n<p>At present, the Latin cross floor plan and the single nave covered by a barrel vault are preserved and, inside, it has the carvings of Santa Teresa, San Jos\u00e9 and Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Carmen. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pilgrim.es\/web\/caminos\/camino-frances\/pueblos\/ponferrada\/puntos-de-interes\/capilla-nuestra-senora-del-carmen.jpg\" alt=\"Capilla Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Carmen\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__accordion-content inactive\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Castillo de los Templarios<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Templar Castle was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 1924. It is built on a small fortress found by the Order of the Temple in 1178. Regarding its structure, it has a Latin cross plan and its interior is topped with an altarpiece made of polychrome wood, where we can find the image of the Virgen de la Encina, patron saint of Bierzo.
