Origins<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tAfter the increase of pilgrimages during the 9th and 10th centuries, <strong>the need of certifying that\n\t\t\t\t\t\tpilgrims have done the itinerary <\/strong>had emerged following both religious and spiritual reasons.These\n\t\t\t\t\ttwo reasons have given privileges to pilgrims when it comes to receiving assistance or accommodation; this is\n\t\t\t\t\thow Compostela appear.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>This is the way The Compostela was born. To substitute the former system that delivered a scallop as a\n\t\t\t\t\taccreditation of arriving to Santiago. This item was very easy to forge so finally was substituted by The\n\t\t\t\t\tCompostela. Nowadays The Compostela is known as\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>the document that certifies that you have completed <\/strong>at least the last 100 kilometers (62 miles)\n\t\t\t\t\ton foot or the last 200 kilometers (124 miles) on bike. This document is issued by The Church Authorities after\n\t\t\t\t\tverifying the seals on it.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>In addition they will ask us about the reason to walk The Way of St. James. Those reasons must be: religious,\n\t\t\t\t\tspirituals or for an internal search. There is in addition, <strong>another document called \u201cin\n\t\t\t\t\t\tMemoriam\u201d<\/strong> only requested for the relatives of those who perished on any of the tracks along The\n\t\t\t\t\tWay.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"benefits\">\n\t\t\t\t<h2>Perks of getting the Compostela (Misspelled sometimes as The Compostelana)<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>But first, we would like to remark <strong>a very common mistake among the pilgrims: <\/strong> an incorrect\n\t\t\t\t\tmisspelling using The Compostelana instead The Compostela. The first one is totally inaccurate<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>As we have mentioned before, <strong>this document granted certain privileges<\/strong> to the pilgrims;When the\n\t\t\t\t\tCatholic Monarchs built in the 16th century the Pilgrims Hospital (Nowadays known as the Catholics Monarchs\n\t\t\t\t\tHotel in the Obradoiro Sq), those pilgrims with The Compostela were available to rest there for free for three\n\t\t\t\t\tdays<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Despite the fact This Hotel is now a Luxurious Inn and hasn\u2019t got anything to do with the previous activities of\n\t\t\t\t\tthe Hospital, it is already stuck to the tradition of giving free breakfast and dinner to the first 10 pilgrims\n\t\t\t\t\tshowing The Compostela.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"how-and-where\">\n\t\t\t\t<h2>How and Where to get The Compostela<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h3>How<\/h3>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>To obtain The Compostela you must fulfill the following premises:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li><strong>The Pilgrimage must be due to both religious and spiritual reasons,<\/strong> or at least in the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tpursuit of finding any of them.<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li><strong>Complying with the following requirements<\/strong>: 100 km \/ 62 mi on foot or on horse or 200 km \/\n\t\t\t\t\t\t124 mi for those on a bike.<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li><strong>Collecting the required seals on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/pilgrims-accreditation\/\"> The Pilgrim\u2019s\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCredential<\/a>.<\/strong> The seals are available in churches, monuments, hostels or even in some\n\t\t\t\t\t\tpubs and cafeterias<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li>At least <strong>two seals a day<\/strong> are required to certify the starting and ending point.<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>You can walk The Way on odd day, as the only important thing is the chronological and geographical order.\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>The date of every journey must be clearly identified <\/strong>as well as the seals. Reminds a parchment and it\u2019ll be delivered to the\n\t\t\t\t\tpilgrim in the Pilgrims Welcome Office.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>You can apply for it in the following mail <a href=\"mailto:certificadodedistancia@catedraldesantiago.es\">certificadodedistancia@catedraldesantiago.es<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pilgrim.es\/web\/planificar\/certificado-de-distancia.webp\" alt=\"Certificate of the Total Distance walked \/ ridden on The Way of St James.\">\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"other-compostelas\">\n\t\t\t\t<h2>The Other Compostelas<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Apart from the official Compostela obtained to finish the Way, according to the requirements, there are other\n\t\t\t\t\tcertificates delivered for ending connected Ways to The St James Way. These other routes are: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/camino-lebaniego\/\">Lebaniego Way,<\/a> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/el-camino-del-salvador\/\">Savior Way,<\/a> or The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/camino-kumano-kodo\/\">Kumano Way<\/a>. They have their own documents to confirm\n\t\t\t\t\tthe ending of the tour. Each document has its own denomination:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/camino-lebaniego\/#Credencial-Lebaniega\">The Liebaniega:<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCertificate obtained after ending The Lebaniego Way on foot or on a bike. It is delivered by The Church and\n\t\t\t\t\t\twill be dispatched only when all the required seals are stamped on it.<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/el-camino-del-salvador\/#La-Salvadorana\">The Salvadorana.<\/a> This document\n\t\t\t\t\t\tis delivered at the very end of The Savior Way which connects both Le\u00f3n and Oviedo Cathedrals It is issued\n\t\t\t\t\t\tby the Dean of The Oviedo\u2019s Cathedral.<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li>Dual Pilgrim: It is maybe\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>one of the most especial certificates in the world<\/strong> due to its peculiarity. To get this Dual\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCertification you must obtain first both The Compostela of The St James Way and the accreditation of the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tKumano Way (Japanese Pilgrimage Route).
