This huge thurible is one of the most representative symbols in the Santiago\u2019s Cathedral. It\u2019s called Botafumeiro which literally means smoke expeller<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"be-interesting\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tAnother interested topics: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/que-hacer-santiago-de-compostela\/\">How to spend your time in Santiago<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"history\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h2>Botafumeiro\u2019s History<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<p>We don\u2019t exactly know when this ritual began, but the first reference could be found on an margin of the Codex.\n\t\t\t\t\tDespite of this, it is firmly believed that <strong>the origin could be even more ancient,<\/strong> around the\n\t\t\t\t\t12th or the 13th century. The use was finally certified on the 14th century conceding in time with Apostle\u2019s\n\t\t\t\t\treliquary bust creation.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>There\u2019s another element that could help us to date back this huge metal censer: the dome. It is known that was\n\t\t\t\t\tbuilt in the middle of the 15th century. A big pulley was installed around the beams , probably with the purpose\n\t\t\t\t\tof holding the Botafumeiro.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>It was in 1554 when Louis XI of France ordered <strong>the construction of a great silver censer for the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCathedral,<\/strong> but this was unfortunately stolen by the Napoleonic army in the 19th century. This event\n\t\t\t\t\tforced to order a new one. This time would be a more humble and practical one to be easily used during worship\n\t\t\t\t\tservices<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<h3>What was the Botafumeiro\u2019s purpose?<\/h3>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>It was mainly used during special events to <strong>remark the importance of some worship services<\/strong> One\n\t\t\t\t\tof those important occasions was The Holy Year.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>The current thurible was dated back on the 1851. In the opening ceremony they tried to bring back this abandoned\n\t\t\t\t\tmedieval ritual . It was in the same year when was noticed for the very first time under the name of \n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>\u201dvota fumeiro\u201d term used by Neira Mosquera <\/strong>in an article written in the Galaica Magazine That\n\t\t\t\t\twas probably an informal word, but that famous writer and reporter from Compostela was the first one using that\n\t\t\t\t\tterm.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Two decades later, when the remains of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/the-way-st-james\/\">Apostle<\/a> were found and the city of\n\t\t\t\t\tSantiago flourished again, a large number of pilgrims started to arrive forcing the use of this element which\n\t\t\t\t\tbeautified the services as well.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"operation\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h2>How the Botafumeiro of Santiago de Compostela works<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<p>Due to its great size and weight<strong> (more than 60 kg and 1,60 m tall)<\/strong> is it required the use of big\n\t\t\t\t\tchains. This chains allow to throw it into the air describing an arc of 60 m wide and <strong>reaching a speed\n\t\t\t\t\t\tof 70 km\/h<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Its huge size <strong>requires up to 8 people to move it<\/strong>. These individuals are known as\n\t\t\t\t\t<i>tiraboleiros.<\/i> The tiraboleiros apart from moving this silver and brass giant, are in charge of moving it\n\t\t\t\t\tfrom the Cathedral\u2019s museum (where is normally located) to the main aisle.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Once hooked, they have to fill it with incense and coal. In that case you should pay a fee<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Watch the Botafumeiro flying <strong>The cost of watching the Botafumeiro outside the scheduled dates will be\n\t\t\t\t\t\tbetween 400-450 \u20ac<\/strong>You\u2019ll probably consider this service a bit expensive, but it is basically the\n\t\t\t\t\tcost of maintenance. During the worship services, all Pilgrims who have collect their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/the-compostela\/\">Cosmpostela<\/a> in the last 24 hours will be\n\t\t\t\t\tnamed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Apart form the name of the pilgrims, will be related their nationality and when they have started their\n\t\t\t\t\tpilgrimage to the Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>The Pilgrim Mass will take place everyday in the main altar of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/the-cathedral-of-santiago\/\">Santiago\u2019s Cathedral<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>at 12:00 pm and 19:30 pm.<\/strong> Coinciding with the Holy Years, the number of pilgrims visiting\n\t\t\t\t\tCompostela tend to multiply the masses as well.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"accidents\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h2>Common Accidents when The Botafumeiro is flying<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<p>During the Pilgrim Mass, The Botafumeiro could <strong>reach a speed of 70 km\/h<\/strong>, describing an arch of\n\t\t\t\t\t82 grades and 65 m tall. All of that implies a great danger in case of any collision or fall over the visitors.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Up to the moment , just <strong>4 accidents have happened <\/strong>leaving 2 slightly injured people.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<h3>The 25th of July, 1499<\/h3>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>On that day, a mass for the Princess Katherine of Aragon took place on The Cathedral. While the Botafumeiro was\n\t\t\t\t\tflying , one of the chains broke. That caused the sudden expulsion of the thrurible <strong>crashing against the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tPlaterias Gate<\/strong> No people were wounded.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<h3>The 23rd of May, 1622<\/h3>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Once again , the chains holding this huge silver Botafumeiro (given by Louis XI) broke causing a crash on the\n\t\t\t\t\tarea where the \u201ctiraboleiros\u201d were located. <strong>No wounded people were fortunately found.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<h3>20th Century<\/h3>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>We know that at least two crashed were reported on this century , but no one know the exact dates.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li>The fist event took place when an assistant got down the altar without realizing how close the Botafumeiro\n\t\t\t\t\t\twas. <strong>The impact caused him 3 broken ribs <\/strong>and his immediate transfer to the hospital.<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li>A couple of years later, some German congressmen who were visiting Santiago, decided to pay the price of The\n\t\t\t\t\t\tBotafumeiro to see it flying during the Pilgrims Mass. Astonished by the magnitude and beauty of the\n\t\t\t\t\t\tswinging, they were getting closer and <strong>closer to the thurible until it rubbed the face of one of the\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmembers of the group.<\/strong>That caused a broken nose.<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>Now you know the Schedule for the different Feasts..
