and\n\t\t\t\t\tforests with the same motivation: get to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/the-cathedral-of-santiago\/\">Santiago\u2019s\n\t\t\t\t\t\tcathedral.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div pilgrim<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"beginnings\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h2>The beginning of the way<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tDuring its fight against Muslims, <strong>King Alfonso II ordered to build a tomb<\/strong> where St\n\t\t\t\t\tJames\u2019 mortal remains were found. This was the beginning of pilgrimages. Another important person\n\t\t\t\t\tthat made this tradition more and more frequent was <strong>Charlemagne, thanks to him all the ways\n\t\t\t\t\t\tbecame safe<\/strong> because he fought against all the Muslims armies.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tA century after, all Europe knew that St James\u2019 remains were in Galicia <strong>so many pilgrims of\n\t\t\t\t\t\tall over the continent<\/strong> wanted to get there. They used to use old Roman roads and trade\n\t\t\t\t\troutes. Since that moment pilgrimages increased more and more pushed up by nobility and clergy. They\n\t\t\t\t\twere built lots of bridges, hospitals and accommodation.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pilgrim.es\/web\/planificar\/barca-apostol.webp\" alt=\"Boat of the Apostle St. James\" \/>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"firstPilgrim\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h2>First pilgrims<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tWe can consider that King <strong>Alfonso II,<\/strong> King of Asturias to 842, was the first\n\t\t\t\t\tpilgrim. He went from Oviedo to Santiago to verify the finding of St James\u2019 mortal remains and also\n\t\t\t\t\tto worship them. This was the beginning of the first official Way known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/primitive-way\/\">Primitive Way<\/a>.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tAnother famous pilgrim was <strong>Aymeric Picaud who wrote part of the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/plan-your-way\/codex-calixtinus\/\">Codex Calixtinus<\/a>, the book\n\t\t\t\t\tnumber five known as A Guide for the Traveller. Aymeric Picaud decided to go through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilgrim.es\/en\/french-way\/\">The French Way<\/a>, taking notes about all the\n\t\t\t\t\tuseful information such as accommodation, temples, gastronomy, cultures, and customs.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tIn the 12 century, this tradition became as famous that <strong>Alfonso VII of Le\u00f3n and Castile,\n\t\t\t\t\t\tLouis VII of France and Philip II of Spain walked to Santiago.<\/strong> People used to build\n\t\t\t\t\tmonuments in some of the cities that they crossed or put a plaque in the places where they stayed\n\t\t\t\t\tthe night.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pilgrim.es\/web\/planificar\/estatua-peregrinos.webp\" alt=\"First Pilgrims statue\" \/>\n\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"decadence\">\n\n\t\t\t\t<h2>Decline of the way<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tNevertheless, in the 14 century the number of pilgrims that went to Santiago decreased because of\n\t\t\t\t\tthe political and economic problems. At this moment <strong>Christian Church was in crisis and Spain\n\t\t\t\t\t\twanted to reconquer the southern territories,<\/strong> so monarchs used all the economic and\n\t\t\t\t\tpolitical power on it.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tIn the 15 century wars, hunger, Protestantism and plague make <strong>the Way<\/strong> less and less\n\t\t\t\t\tfamous.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tIt was in 17 century when the pilgrimage to Compostela restarted, but in the 19 century the new\n\t\t\t\t\tscientific finds made that pilgrimages decrease.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\n\t\t\t<section id=\"rise\">\n\n\t\t\t\t<h2>Boom of the way<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tNevertheless, <strong>in 1884 after rediscovering St James\u2019 mortal remains, Pope Leo\n\t\t\t\t\t\tXIII<\/strong>said that these mortal remains were the original mortal remains. The fact of being\n\t\t\t\t\tconsidered a <strong>World Heritage Site<\/strong> increased the number of pilgrims in this\n\t\t\t\t\tthousand-year-old route.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Nowadays the way is really popular.<\/strong> In 2015 more than two hundred and six thousand\n\t\t\t\t\tpeople reached Santiago.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tPilgrims come from all over the world, especially from Italy, Germany, the United States or Japan.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>History of the Camino de Santiago History of the Camino de Santiago The Codex Calixtinus St James.
