Tailor-Made Trips

What is a tailor-made trip?

+

A tailor-made trip is a program specifically designed to meet the needsof each client and is self-guided so you can go at your own pace.

The travel dates are fully flexible, allowing you to choose when to start and finish the Camino based on your availability. The stages are set according to the recommended distance, the days you have available, and your budget.

Accommodation is provided in our network of private hostels, guesthouses, hotels, rural houses, manors, and paradors, always considering the client's preferences and maintaining the required minimum quality standards in each case.

When can I do it?

+

You can do it whenever you wish. The dates are fully flexible and tailored to you, so you can start and finish whenever you want. After preparing a custom quote for your trip, we will confirm the availability of everything you need so you can book for the dates that suit you and complete the Camino de Santiago with peace of mind.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of people for tailor-made trips?

+

No, for tailor-made trips there is no minimum or maximum number of people. You can do the Camino alone or with as many people as you wish, without any issues.

What is included in a tailor-made trip?

+

All our tailor-made trips include, as a default, all nights in the type of accommodation requested by the client, including the night before starting the Camino and the night upon completion after reaching the destination, breakfasts, the Pilgrim's Credential required for daily stamps during the stages, comprehensive travel insurance, luggage transfer between accommodations so you don't have to carry it, and complete travel documentation with accommodation reservations, the guide for the Camino you will follow, and various instructions regarding all included or optional services you may have contracted.

How does it differ from a group trip?

+

The most significant difference between a tailor-made trip and a group trip is that, in the latter, you would be part of an organized group with a guide and support vehicle, while in a tailor-made trip, there is no guide or such vehicles. Additionally, group trips depart on a fixed date and have a set duration, while tailor-made trips are flexible in both dates and stage duration.

Group trip

What are group trips?

+

Group trips consist of itineraries designed by Pilgrim to undertake the Camino de Santiago as part of an organized group.

The main values of group trips are, first of all, the guide, who will accompany the group throughout the journey and lead the different stages, explaining everything encountered along the way. Additionally, there will be a support vehicle available throughout the trip, responsible for transporting any individuals who may need to leave the stage. Furthermore, the groups include valuable services such as dinners, luggage transfer between stages, and a welcome package.

What services are included?

+

All our group trips include:

A certified guide accompanying you throughout all stages, Emergency vehicle

All nights in high-quality accommodations such as Superior Guesthouses, Hotels, Rural Houses, and Manors

Breakfasts and dinners

Pilgrim's Credential

Luggage transfer between stages

A welcome package including a backpack, cap, and scallop shell

Additionally, you will have comprehensive travel insurance and full documentation.

Can I do any Camino in a group?

+

Groups are organized based on the Caminos and dates most in demand by our clients, so, at the moment, you can only do the French Camino and the Portuguese Camino with an organized group, where you will join other pilgrims you don't know.

On the other hand, if you have a formed group of more than 8 people, we can prepare a tailor-made trip for you that includes all the services offered in our guided Caminos. Feel free to contact us without obligation.

What are the typical members of a group like?

+

There is a wide variety of profiles in our guided groups; you can find people traveling alone, couples, families generally ranging from 3 to 5 members, groups of friends, etc. Additionally, there is a great variety of ages, which, combining both factors, makes the groups a very interesting option to enjoy the Camino while meeting many different people and learning from everyone in the group.

What happens if the group walks too fast or too slow compared to me?

+

Each group member can walk at their own pace; there is no obligation to keep up with the group's pace. It will depend on each person's abilities, age, physical preparation, and many other factors. However, our guide will be very attentive to all members to ensure you enjoy the stage without any issues.

Do I have to share a room with another group member?

+

Initially, group rooms are double rooms with two beds, designed for you to share a room with another group member or someone accompanying you.

If you wish, you can have a single room (subject to availability) for a small supplement.

Can I use the support vehicle anywhere?

+

Throughout the Camino, there are numerous meeting points with the guide and the rest of the group, where the pilgrim can decide if they want to abandon the stage due to any mishap, discomfort, or injury. At that point, the emergency vehicle protocol will be activated to contact the vehicle and arrange for the transfer to the end of the stage.

Do I have to carry my luggage during the stage?

+

No, your luggage will be transported from one accommodation to another so you can walk comfortably and without any weight. During the stage, you only need to carry a small backpack with essentials (water, a snack, some nuts, mobile phone, documents, etc.). For this, Pilgrim provides you with a comfortable, small-sized backpack that will serve this purpose.

Packaged experiences

What are packaged experiences?

+

Packaged experiences are trips specially designed by our team of experts that cover the most popular sections of the Camino and include the most common added services to ensure your trip is carried out in the best possible way.

What services do they include?

+

Packaged experiences include all accommodations of the indicated category, breakfasts, luggage transfer between stages, the Pilgrim's Credential, comprehensive travel insurance, and full documentation with all the necessary instructions.

Am I traveling alone or with someone?

+

You will walk alone or with those who book the trip with you, that is, with your same group. In mid and high season, on most Caminos, you will find dozens of people during the stages and at the various accommodations with whom you are sure to share an exceptional experience.

Can I add or remove services from a packaged experience?

+

Of course, even though these are initially fixed experiences where the itinerary has been designed not to be modified, we do allow you to add any services you deem necessary for your experience, such as transfers, extra nights, bike rental, etc., or even remove those that you don't want included, such as the night before starting the Camino, the night after finishing the trip, luggage transfer between stages, or breakfasts.

The remaining services must remain because they are essential for the logistics and proper functioning of the trip.

Can I buy an experience just for myself?

+

Of course, even if you're traveling alone, you can buy one of our packaged experiences without any issue. Although the price is usually indicated based on a double room, you can easily book the experience by paying the supplement for a single room.

Can I gift an experience to someone else?

+

Of course, you can gift one of our experiences to anyone you choose.

In this case, the person you specify will receive a gift voucher for the experience you have booked as a gift, or for a specific amount that they can redeem for one of the experiences they choose.

What does my travel insurance cover?

+

The travel insurance we include with each trip is mainly designed to cover any medical issues that may arise during your experience on the Camino.

It is a comprehensive insurance covering potential unforeseen events, and it also provides guaranteed medical assistance and numerous benefits, which you can review in the General Terms and Conditions of the Travel Insurance

+

Please note that if your booking is made 4 days or less before departure, we cannot guarantee that you will receive the credential.

If this is your case, or if you are not traveling with Pilgrim, you can acquire your credential from the various associations of Friends of the Camino spread across different countries and cities. You can also get it at most of the starting points of the Camino in monasteries, churches, or even in the accommodation along the way.

+

Do I have to pay anything if I want to modify my reservation?

+

Any changes made to a reservation (including changes to name, number of people, type of accommodation, dates, additional nights requested or removed, additional services, etc.) must be communicated via email: reservas@pilgrim.es or info@pilgrim.es and will be subject to the corresponding modification charges:

A management fee of 25€ per change will apply for reservations between 1 and 6 nights; 40€ per change for reservations between 7 and 14 nights; and 60€ per change for reservations of 15 nights or more. The consumer will be responsible for any additional costs that may arise due to the requested changes.

The changes mentioned must be communicated at least 7 days before the start date of the Camino.

The agency reserves the right to modify/cancel the trip within 5 days after receiving the payment from the client, if the delay in accepting the budget or the imminent departure date requested by the client results in the unavailability of accommodation meeting Pilgrim’s minimum quality standards.

In case of delay in accepting the budget, the client is entitled to a full refund of the reservation amount, except for the 100€ management fee.

In case of an imminent departure date requested by the client that prevents the trip from taking place, the client is entitled to a full refund of the reservation amount without any penalty.

What does the emergency assistance consist of?

+

Emergency assistance is a free service offered by Pilgrim in all its experiences to resolve any incidents you may have during your Camino journey. There is a 24-hour helpline you can use to contact the agency in case of an emergency.

The service only covers telephone assistance and does not include any services the client may request during the call, except for those covered by the travel insurance policy.

Through our emergency service, we will guide you on how to proceed with any issues that arise during your Camino, such as how to use your travel insurance, resolve any incidents with the services you have booked, or arrange any taxi or transfer the client may need or request, which will be at the client's own expense.

Customization of the trip

Modify stages

Can I divide a stage that I think is too long?

+

Normally, there is no impediment to dividing a stage that may be too long into two shorter stages.

Sometimes, the only obstacle is accommodation, as there may not be any accommodation halfway through the stage. However, we can divide it if, after completing the first half of the route, you are transferred back to the previous accommodation by taxi and then, the next day, we return you to the point where you finished the previous day to continue from there.

Consult us about any modifications before booking.

Can I add more nights at the beginning or end of my trip?

+

Of course, you can add as many nights as you wish at the beginning or end of your trip. We will create a custom quote for you with all the extra nights you request.

Can I add rest days to my trip?

+

Yes, if you wish, you can add as many rest days as you consider necessary. You just need to let us know where you'd like to rest when requesting your quote, and we will add an extra night in each town where you'd like to stop. Please note that adding unexpected rest days once you're already on the Camino will incur additional costs.

Can I modify my itinerary once I am on the Camino?

+

As a general rule, it is not possible to make any modifications to a program once it has started. If exceptional circumstances arise, consult with our reservations department and we will inform you about the options available in each case.

Please note that modifying your itinerary once it has started may affect the rest of your bookings, potentially causing a significant increase in the cost of your program if it needs to be altered in whole or in part.

Can I continue beyond the end of a stage if I feel up to it?

+

The program is designed to stay at a specific point, so you can continue as far as you feel capable, but if you wish to maintain your reservations, you must stay at the designated point. Otherwise, all future dates will be altered, and we cannot guarantee that they can be moved due to availability issues.

Manage departure and return

Can you manage my transfers to the start of the Camino?

+

If you need any transfer by train, bus, taxi, or one of our private vehicles, we can make all the necessary arrangements to get you to the start of your Camino in the most comfortable, fast, and economical way possible.

Can you manage my return home once the Camino is over?

+

We can manage all necessary transfers for your return home once the Camino is finished. Don't hesitate to consult with our specialized agents.

Accommodation and hotel services

Accommodation

What type of accommodation is included in my trip?

+

The accommodations included in each type of trip are those listed in the trip details or, if applicable, in the custom quote made for the client.

Standard programs are usually carried out in the following accommodations:

Private hostels: shared rooms with shared bathroom

Guesthouses and Hostels: single, double, or triple rooms with private bathroom (subject to availability)

Hotels and Rural Houses: single, double, or triple rooms with private bathroom (subject to availability)

Higher-tier programs are usually a combination of Hotels, Rural Houses, Pazos, and Paradores, depending on the availability of each type of accommodation at different stages and their availability on specific dates.

All accommodations have been carefully selected based on their services and location.

Where are the accommodations located?

+

The accommodations are located either in the center of the various towns along the Camino, at the foot of the Camino itself, or in nearby towns, in which case a detour will be necessary.

For accommodations that are located off the Camino route and require transportation to reach, the agency will cover the transfer.

The location of the different accommodations may vary depending on the availability at each stage or Camino, and the quality offered by these accommodations to maintain the guarantee required by Pilgirm.

What types of rooms and beds are available?

+

The following types of rooms are available:

Shared rooms: You will sleep in a bunk bed in a shared room with other pilgrims

Single rooms: These have one bed, usually 90 or 105 cm in size

Double rooms: Can be matrimonial (one double bed) or twin (two separate beds).

Triple rooms: They have three separate beds, though sometimes they may include one double bed and one single or extra bed.

Do the rooms have a private bathroom?

+

Except for private hostels, where shared rooms do not have private bathrooms, in all other types of accommodation, rooms are booked with private bathrooms.

If private rooms with bathrooms are unavailable on a given date, this will be clearly stated, giving the client the option to choose whether or not to have a private room with a shared bathroom.

Do I need to notify the accommodation of my arrival and/or departure time?

+

In most cases, it is not necessary to notify the accommodation of your arrival time, unless we instruct you to do so in your travel documentation, in which case you should follow the provided instructions. However, it is highly recommended that if your stage is delayed and you expect to arrive at the accommodation after 19:00, you notify them in advance in case it is an accommodation with no continuous reception, and they need to arrange a special check-in for you.

Also, the usual check-in time is after 12:00 to ensure your room is ready when you arrive.

You will have all the contact information for the various accommodations in your travel documentation.

Can I know my accommodations before making the reservation?

+

We work with different accommodations in each of the towns along the various Caminos, so for tailor-made trips or individual experiences, we cannot provide information on the accommodations in advance, as they depend on availability at the time you confirm your reservation.

We will send you the different reservations and all information related to the accommodations along with your travel documentation before you begin your journey.

In the Group Camino option, we can inform you in advance of the different accommodations assigned to the group.

Hotel services

Do the accommodations have Wi-Fi or internet access?

+

Most accommodations offer Wi-Fi internet access, or they have a designated area for connecting via computers available for this purpose in the common areas.

However, we cannot guarantee that all accommodations will have internet access due to the location of some of them in rural areas where a quality connection is not available.

Do the accommodations have laundry service?

+

Some accommodations have their own laundry service, while others have a designated area where guests can do their own laundry.

We recommend checking with each accommodation or, if you plan to use this service, refer to the information provided about each accommodation for the services they offer.

Does the accommodation provide bedding and towels, or should I bring my own?

+

All accommodations with private rooms provide bedding and towels, although in the case of private hostels, it is highly recommended to bring a towel and a sleeping bag, especially in winter, as the provided bedding (sometimes disposable paper sheets) may be insufficient for some people during colder days.

What do SA, AD, MP mean?

+

Here we explain the meaning of the different abbreviations:

SA (Accommodation Only): This is a regime where only accommodation of the specified type is included, with no meals.

AD (Accommodation and Breakfast): This regime includes accommodation and breakfast. Breakfast may be managed outside the accommodation if it does not have a cafeteria.

MP (Half Board): This regime includes accommodation, breakfast, and dinner. Breakfast and/or dinner may be managed outside the accommodation if it does not have a cafeteria and/or a meal or bar service.

What time is breakfast served?

+

Depending on the accommodation, breakfast is served at different times. In most cases, and keeping in mind the pilgrim's needs, breakfast usually starts being served early, around 7 AM, but it may vary depending on the accommodation's policy. We recommend checking the time when you arrive at your accommodation.

Can I opt for full board?

+

As a rule, we only offer half board, as it is highly recommended not to book meals with the agency, as you'll be tied to arriving at the designated location for lunch at the reserved time. However, if you wish, we can arrange full board for you or your group, including all meals of the day at partner establishments

Is it possible to do the Camino with special dietary needs?

+

Of course, but you must inform us of your allergies or intolerances when making your reservation so we can take them into account when preparing your trip. If you are celiac or gluten intolerant, we recommend buying your own bread, as most establishments do not offer gluten-free bread.

Services available while walking

Are there cafeterias, restaurants, or shops along the entire route?

+

Most towns are already prepared to cater to pilgrims, so you'll easily find places to buy provisions or stop for something to eat or drink.

On our website, you'll find information about the services available at each stage.

Are there toilets along the entire route?

+

It is not common to find public toilets along the Camino, so the most usual solution is to use the toilets in various cafeterias and bars along the route.

In many places, you may need to make a purchase in order to use the toilets available to the public.

Are there drinking water fountains along the different stages?

+

You'll find various fountains along the Camino where you can refill your bottle or canteen with water. However, we ask that you only do so if the fountain clearly indicates that the water is potable and safe to drink.

If there is no indication, you should avoid drinking from it to prevent the risk of infections or stomach issues, and you can purchase water at various supermarkets or bars along the Camino.

Is there mobile phone coverage along the Camino?

+

Mobile coverage along the route has been significantly improved by various public administrations and telecommunications companies, so you'll find good coverage throughout almost the entire route.

However, in predominantly rural areas, coverage may occasionally be limited or even nonexistent until you reach a location with a signal repeater.

Is public transportation available along the Camino if for any reason I cannot finish the stage?

+

Public transportation exists between some towns at specific hours, but in some cases, it may not be easy to access, depending on the schedules of different companies and each town. Taxis may be an alternative if public transportation is unavailable and you are unable to finish the stage.

Do I have to share a room with another group member?

+

Initially, group rooms are double rooms with two beds, designed for you to share a room with another group member or someone accompanying you.

If you wish, you can have a single room (subject to availability) for a small supplement.

Luggage transfer

What is luggage transfer between stages?

+

Luggage transfer between stages is a service we offer that allows you to walk without carrying your luggage, as we will transfer your backpack to the next accommodation, and you only need to focus on walking.

Is it included in all trips?

+

By default, it is included in all our trips, but you can remove it if you don’t want it or add it to trips where it was not initially included.

This service can be booked with just 24 hours' notice before the start of the trip or during the trip.

Please note that this service is not available on all sections of the Camino. For more information, consult with our Planning agents.

Who transports my luggage?

+

Your luggage will be transported in a van from one of our partner companies, depending on the Camino and the stages.

You will receive all the necessary instructions to carry out the service daily. You just need to leave it at the reception of each accommodation with an identifying label that we will provide, and it will be transferred to the reception of the next accommodation.

What is the maximum weight of my luggage for transportation?

+

The maximum weight for each piece of luggage is 15 kilograms, and only one item will be transported per person. Additional luggage can be transported by paying the corresponding fee.

Can I transport more than one suitcase per person?

+

You can transport as many suitcases as you wish per person by paying the corresponding fee for each suitcase, with a maximum weight of 15kg.

Can delicate luggage such as laptop bags be transported?

+

We advise against including delicate items in the backpacks or suitcases to be transported, as the insurance only covers the loss of luggage, not damages to its contents.

However, if you choose to transport a laptop, tablet, or any other delicate item, we recommend that it be as protected as possible inside the luggage to avoid any incidents.

Is there any kind of insurance for the transportation of my luggage?

+

For luggage transportation, we have insurance that covers loss or misplacement, but it does not cover damages to the internal contents of your luggage, as we do not know its prior condition.

The Camino by bike

Do the bike programs include the rental of the bike?

+

Bike programs do not include bike rental; this is an optional service that you can request separately.

What type of bikes can I rent?

+

We have MTB (mountain bikes) and electric bikes (e-bikes), both specially designed for bike tourism and for trips like the Camino de Santiago, which combines dirt paths, cobblestones, and stretches of asphalt.

You can find all the information about our rental bikes by clicking here.

What equipment is included?

+

All our bikes come with complete equipment, including: a pair of waterproof panniers with 20 liters of capacity each, a brand new water bottle, a multi-tool kit, ergonomic grips, a lock, and a puncture repair kit.

The only thing not included is the helmet, which is not rented for hygiene reasons, but you have the option to purchase a brand new one.

Can I rent the bike without all the equipment?

+

If you wish, you can rent the bike without equipment, although this is not recommended. Even if you are transferring your luggage during the stages, it is advisable to always have panniers with a puncture kit, a multi-tool, and a lock on the bike for any unforeseen events or stops during the stage.

How do I pick up my rental bike?

+

Your rental bike will be delivered to the first accommodation the night before starting the Camino. If we have not managed your reservation with the accommodation, you will need to make sure they accept the delivery of the bike. If you are not staying the first night at the starting point, we will inform you of the pick-up point after your booking.

You can see all the delivery conditions by clicking here.

Do I have to assemble the bike or will it be delivered assembled?

+

The bikes are shipped in a special box for transport, nearly assembled. However, you will need to adjust the handlebars to the correct height and attach the pedals.

For this, you will have a multi-tool and simple instructions inside the box with your rental bike.

On some occasions, depending on the destination and bike type, you may also need to install the front wheel if it has been removed, with the multi-tool provided for assembly.

You can see all the bike rental conditions by clicking here.

If I bring my own bike, can I rent just the equipment?

+

No, unfortunately, we cannot rent only the equipment for our bikes.

If I bring my own bike, can I get Camino assistance?

+

Camino assistance is a service designed for our rental bikes, and we cannot offer it if you travel with your own bike, as we do not know its initial condition and whether it is ready for a route like the Camino de Santiago.

Where will I leave my bike each night?

+

If we manage all your accommodations, we will ensure that each one has a safe place for bikes, where you can leave it securely while you sleep.

If, on the other hand, you manage your own accommodations, it is important to check this when making your reservation.

You should inform the reception staff that you have a bike to store when you arrive at the accommodation.

What happens if I get injured or tired during the stage?

+

If you get injured or are tired, you can use the 24-hour assistance phone to arrange a transfer for you and your bike to the next accommodation. If the injury is due to a cause covered by your travel insurance, the cost of the transfer may be covered by the insurance. In all other cases, the cost of the transfer will be paid directly at the time.

What happens if I get a flat tire or mechanical breakdown?

+

If it is one of our rental bikes, you will have a puncture repair kit and a phone assistance number to guide you on how to proceed in case of a mechanical failure.

We have a customer support phone service that is available only to customers who have rented bikes from us. From this service, we will guide and assist you in fixing the flat, and in case of a breakdown, the technician will assess the procedure to follow.

Does the Camino by bike have more sections on asphalt or trails?

+

Depending on the specific Camino, the most common experience is a combination of trails and asphalt. However, depending on your physical preparation and the type of bike you travel with, you can use many of the dirt sections designed for walking pilgrims, thus avoiding the asphalt.

On the other hand, if your physical preparation is more limited and your bike is not entirely suitable for the Camino, you can use the existing variants that run on asphalt, as in some cases, the trail sections are not suitable for cyclists due to being too narrow, too steep, or too rough.
